Lasik surgeries have become increasingly common in recent times, with a notable
preference among patients over other vision correction options. According to recent
surveys, approximately 500,000 U.S. residents undergo Lasik procedures to correct their
vision.
The latest data also indicate a high level of consumer satisfaction, ranging from 90% to 92%.
These surgeries are typically performed by highly qualified Ophthalmologists, utilizing
advanced procedures compared to their predecessors.
While about 30% of patients may experience temporary side effects such as dry eyes post-
surgery, the American Refractive Surgery Council asserts that the complication rate for the
technique is less than 1%.
However, despite its popularity, Lasik procedures have faced criticism from industry experts.
Concerns have been raised regarding potential post-surgery complications, which may
extend beyond what is commonly publicized. These complications often include dry eyes,
pain, double vision, and night-time vision problems.
It's worth noting that some patients may still require eyeglasses following the surgery,
especially those taking specific medications or dealing with chronic diseases like diabetes,
which may elevate the risk of complications.
Dr. Vance Thompson, incoming VP of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive
Surgery, emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance in discussing Lasik procedures.
